Multi-arch with podman manifests
by Alexander Wellbrock 17 Nov '20

17 Nov '20

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 Hey there, since buildx is not a thing yet to build multi-arch images on one host I'd like to make use of the multi-arch feature of registries like docker.io and quay.io. I'm using the podman manifest command for this purpose but struggle to get it to work properly. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I've get it to work (kind-of) by building two images on two different hosts architecture wise and then used podman manifest create to create a multi-arch manifest of both images. I then used podman manifest push to get it onto quay.io. This works and I'm able to use it, but unfortunately there is a catch right now. If I'm doing this multiple times, it complains that since a manifest for example-image:latest is already present. So it only work if the manifest does not already exist. I can't update it with newer images. Only if I remove the manifest :latest manually beforehand it obviously works again, but I'd like to avoid that. Apart from that it makes sense I suppose, because I'd rather like to update the manifest with new images then to override the old manifest, right? I then tried to use podman manifest add, remove etc. Podman then complains about manifest version not supported. E.g. I tried to update the actual images per architecture and then add the new ones to the manifest which I couldn't get to work. I'm highly confused about the podman manifest command man page. demo: slurm-container-cluster
by Erik Sjölund 14 Nov '20

14 Nov '20

Here is a project to run Slurm with Podman containers that I just released: https://github.com/eriksjolund/slurm-container-cluster It can create a Slurm cluster over ssh with the help of norouter and sshocker. The project was forked from https://github.com/giovtorres/slurm-docker-cluster I also made a tweet: https://twitter.com/eriksjolundcomp/status/1327639027814686720 I thought it might be interesting to any Slurm users on this mailing list.

Looking for Topics - Next Podman Community Meeting
by Tom Sweeney 11 Nov '20

11 Nov '20

Howdy All, The next Podman Community Meeting is coming up soon on Tuesday December 1, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern (UTC-5). At the moment I've just a few small topics to talk about and no major topics. If you've a topic that you'd like to talk about, I'd love to hear it. Topics might be: "How the transition from Docker to Podman went for our team", or "How I use Podman in my day to day work", or a related Podman related project that you'd like to show us, or more? It doesn't have to be just Podman, if you've something of interest from the Buildah, Skopeo or other related container arenas that would be great too. Or if you want to send in an "Ask an Expert" type of question, perhaps I can find a Podman developer to show how it's done. Let me know and get the thinking caps on! Two bits of administrative business. The meeting after this one is scheduled for Tuesday January 5, 2021. Given that's the first day back after a long holiday break for many people, I'm thinking of cancelling or postponing that one. Let's talk at the meeting about that. Then one last thing that I keep forgetting to mention. If you'd like to be sent a calendar invite for these meetings, please let me know and I'll add you to the list for those. Thanks All! t

Podman Community Meeting - Tues Nov 3, 2020 - 11:00 a.m. EST
by Tom Sweeney 28 Oct '20

28 Oct '20

Hi All, Just a quick reminder that the next Podman Community Meeting is happening next Tuesday November 3, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. EST (UTC-5). The meeting is free to attend via BlueJeans video conferencing and is scheduled for an hour. Two quick notes: o The US is turning the clocks back one hour this Sunday November 1, so our UTC offset is shifting from -4 to -5. o There's a little election going on in the USA on the meeting date. If you're in the US and this time is the only time you can get out and vote, please go vote. We'll be recording the meeting and you can watch it after you vote. The agenda is here: https://podman.io/community/meeting/agenda/ and includes the BlueJeans link for the meeting and the HackMD link where we'll take the meeting minutes. Hope to see a bunch of you there! t

We have generated a new repo https://github.com/containers/shortnames
by Daniel Walsh 22 Oct '20

22 Oct '20

The goal is to collect shortnames of container images at particular registries. Would love to get lists of images specific to distributions. Prepopulated with the images from Fedora, since they were fairly easy to gather. Since the Repo is brand new please open PRs to fix up the README.md or any problems that you see.

Podman Community Meeting - Tuesday November 3, 2020 - 11:00 a.m. Eastern (UTC-05:00)
by Tom Sweeney 21 Oct '20

21 Oct '20

Hi All! Just a quick reminder that the next Podman Community Meeting is coming up two weeks from today, Tuesday November 3, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time (UTC-05:00). A couple notes about that. A) The USA is "falling back" on Sunday November 1 to Eastern Standard Time. So our UTC offset will be -05:00 instead of -04:00. B) Secondarily, there happens to be a little election going on in the USA that day. If you are US based and you have not voted by that time and the only time you can vote is during the meeting time, please go vote. We will be recording this meeting so you can replay it afterwards. We have a couple of topics lined up for the meeting already. Anders Bjorklund will be talking about boot2podman/podman-archive (basically a varlink post-mortem) and Brent Baude will be talking about Red Hat's perspective on the direction of the future design for Podman. We also have some time set aside for Questions and Answers, so start thinking of some questions that you'd like answered! If by chance you have a topic that you would like to discuss or present upon, please let me know. We might be able to add it to this meeting, and if not, then for a future one. We will again be using BlueJeans to video conference (https://bluejeans.com/796412039) and we will also use HackMD to take notes (https://hackmd.io/fc1zraYdS0-klJ2KJcfC7w) I will send out a finalized agenda later next week. Like last time, no cost to attend. Hope to see a bunch of you there! t
