Recommended way to manage events.log file
by Dale Baley 15 Jul '21

15 Jul '21

Hi, we rely on podman events via file for our workflows. Is there a recommended way to truncate/rotate/move the events.log file without losing potential event logs while doing so? journald isn't an option. Thanks in advance

rootful containers in KVM VM - host cannot freeze FS
by lejeczek 14 Jul '21

14 Jul '21

Hi guys. I cannot say whether it is podman, container or something else or all things together but problem is such that: -> $ virsh domfsfreeze ove error: Unable to freeze filesystems error: internal error: unable to execute QEMU agent command 'guest-fsfreeze-freeze': failed to open /var/lib/containers/storage/overlay: Permission denied and that happens when a rootful pod is up & running on a given VM, but above command succeeds when pod is stopped. all suggestions on possible "fix" are much appreciated. many thanks, L.

by Tom Sweeney 13 Jul '21

13 Jul '21

Hi All, The next Podman Community Cabal meeting is this coming Thursday July 15, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. EDT (UTC-4). There are a couple of topics on the agenda at the moment on HackMD (https://hackmd.io/gQCfskDuRLm7iOsWgH2yrg?both) and we're happy to discuss further topics, time permitting. If you have a topic that you'd like to discuss, please add it to the agenda on HackMD. We have also set aside the last 15 minutes of the one hour meeting as an open discussion for any and all questions. The meeting is free to attend and the Video Conference is here: https://github.com/containers/podman/discussions/10670 As a note, these meetings will happen on the third Thursday of the month and will not be replacing the Podman Community meetings which happen on the first Tuesday of the month. The Community meetings are generally focused on demos and news from the contributors, while the Cabal meetings are more focused on planning and discussion of possible future changes to the project or issues that are trying to be worked through on the project. Hope to see you there this Thursday! t

by fugkco 08 Jul '21

08 Jul '21

Hi all, Seems the latest version in the ubuntu repos haven't been updated for a while. Latest version is 3.1.2: $ apt policy podman podman: Installed: 100:3.1.2-1 Candidate: 100:3.1.2-1 Version table: *** 100:3.1.2-1 500 500 https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/devel:/kubic:/libcontainers:/sta… Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 2.0.6+dfsg1-1ubuntu1.2 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy-updates/universe amd64 Packages 2.0.6+dfsg1-1ubuntu1 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy/universe amd64 Packages Is there any reason for not updating them? Looks at the repos this is the case also for Debian 10 (3.0.1) and Ubuntu 21.04 (also 3.1.2). Thanks

No Podman Community Meeting next Tuesday July 6, 2021
by Tom Sweeney 01 Jul '21

01 Jul '21

Hi All, Just a quick reminder that there is NO Podman Community Meeting next week due to a number of people taking the week as vacation or in some instances having the day as a holiday. Our next Podman Community Meeting is the first Tuesday in August, August 3, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. EDT (UTC-4). As a second reminder, on the third Thursday of the month, we will be holding a Podman Community Cabal meeting, starting on Thursday, July 15, 2021. Cabal meetings are used to discuss any design question, issue, or other related topics with the maintainers of the Podman project. We will also try to leave at least the last 20 minutes of the hour-long meeting as an “Open Forum”. If you have a topic for the meeting, please send a note to the list. Otherwise, we hope to see you there at this video meeting: https://github.com/containers/podman/discussions/10670. For more information on the meetings: https://podman.io/community/meeting/ For those of you in the USA, have a very happy and safe July 4th! t

New Blogs on Podman in a container.
by Daniel Walsh 01 Jul '21

01 Jul '21

One of the most common issues and requests for information is on running Podman inside of a container. Whether the container was launched by Podman, Docker or Kubernetes/OpenShift. Urvashi and I wrote a couple of blogs trying to handle as many different uses cases and methods for running Podman in a container. https://www.redhat.com/sysadmin/podman-inside-container https://www.redhat.com/sysadmin/podman-inside-kubernetes If you are interested, please read and Social Media them.

Podman's GitHub upstream branch has been renamed!
by Tom Sweeney 30 Jun '21

30 Jun '21

Hi All, Just a quick note aimed mostly towards our contributors. The 'master' branch on the Podman GitHub Repository (https://github.com/containers/podman) has been renamed to 'main'. If you have a local clone of the repository, then you should do the following: git branch -m master main git fetch origin git branch -u origin/main main git remote set-head origin -a Then the hardest part will then be retraining the muscle memory in your fingers to type main now! FWIW, the Buildah and Skopeo projects, along with most of the other projects in the the Containers organization on GitHub have also been changed. Best Wishes, t

environment variables in exec session not visible?
by James Miller 28 Jun '21

28 Jun '21

Hi, I have a problem with an environment variable that I am passing into an exec session. The command has worked in the past but recently, I am unable to pass an environment variable that a called executable can see properly. If I run, podman exec -e VAR='bob' -it some_cont bash -c "env", the environment is printed out and includes the environment variable VAR='bob'. But I can not run podman exec .... bash -c "echo $VAR" successfully, nor in my current situation am I able to run podman exec -e PASSWORD="$var_I_just_read" .... bash -c "mysql -uroot -p${PASSWORD}... ". Because the env variable PASSWORD is not present, the mysql command asks for a password. This was certainly working ok previously, but doesn't seem to function now. I have tried a bunch of different permutations, including running the command with real variables instead of environment variables, and it works ok. Also, I am sure that I used to be able to run 'podman exec -e SOMEVAR='Bob' -it cont_name bash -c "echo $SOMEVAR" and get Bob output. What am I doing wrong? run podman without isolation
by Hendrik Haddorp 23 Jun '21

23 Jun '21

Hi, I want to run a build job inside a podman container. This is only done to have better control on what tools and versions of those are installed. I'm not interested in any isolation or security and would ideally like my my user id, groups and so on to stay the same as on the host. So far things look quite promising when using these flags: --cgroups=disabled --net=host --annotation=run.oci.keep_original_groups=1 --security-opt label=disable Is there any easier / better way to achieve this kind of thin "isolation"? regards, Hendrik
