[image: podman-desktop-hero-1.27] Podman Desktop 1.27 is now available. Click here to download it <https://podman-desktop.io/downloads>! This release brings exciting new features and improvements: - High contrast and accent colors support: High contrast themes (light and dark) and accent colors have been added throughout the application for improved accessibility, visibility, and a uniform color palette. - Navigation history with back and forward controls: Added navigation history dropdown to the back/forward navigation buttons accessible through long-press. - Extension development JSON schema: A JSON schema is now available for the development and validation of Podman Desktop extensions' package.json files. - Security updates: Multiple CVE vulnerabilities resolved in Podman Desktop and its extensions to ensure a safer work environment. ------------------------------ Release detailsHigh contrast and Accent colors support Podman Desktop now includes two new high contrast themes that provide maximum contrast for better visual accessibility. The hc-light theme features white backgrounds with dark borders and text, while hc-dark uses black backgrounds with light elements. Both themes have been integrated throughout the app and its UI components to ensure better visibility and readability. [image: High contrast dark theme] [image: High contrast light theme] The app colors have also been updated to use accent colors instead of hardcoded colors to make it easier to manage custom color palettes and support consistent coloring throughout the UI. Navigation history with back and forward controls Following the introduction of the back and forward navigation controls in 1.25, Podman Desktop now also includes a navigation history dropdown when long-pressing the navigation controls. Users can quickly browse their navigation history using the dropdown, making it easier to navigate across multiple sections. [image: Navigation history dropdown]Extension development JSON schema JSON schema for Podman Desktop extensions is now available in the SchemaStore website <https://www.schemastore.org/> or directly at https://raw.githubusercontent.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/main/schema…. This takes away the guesswork and provides autocomplete for available properties while editing the file, streamlining extension development. Add "$schema": " https://raw.githubusercontent.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/main/schema… " to your extension's package.json file to see all available fields and values. NOTE: If you are using VSCode, you might need to add https://raw.githubusercontent.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/main/schema… to the JSON › Schema Download: Trusted Domains list for it to work. Podman Desktop 1.26 Release! 🎉

Podman Desktop 1.26 Release! 🎉 [image: podman-desktop-hero-1.26] Podman Desktop 1.26 is now available. Click here to download it <https://podman-desktop.io/downloads>! This release brings exciting new features and improvements: - Host certificate sync to Podman VMs: Synchronize local certificates to running Podman VMs through the command palette. - Extension authentication access control: Extensions now require explicit user permission for authentication access with improved session management. - Pull image workflow improvements: Image pulling now includes a cancel button and quick action buttons for better workflow management. - Environment-based filtering: Container, pod, image, volume, and network pages now support filtering by environment. - Additional managed configuration settings for extensions: Two new managed configuration settings allow administrators to disable custom extension installs and hide the extension catalog. - Troubleshooting section in Settings: A new troubleshooting entry has been added to the settings menu for quicker access to diagnostics. - Confirmation dialog for connection deletion: Deleting a provider connection now shows a confirmation dialog to prevent accidental removal. Release detailsHost certificate sync to Podman VMs Working behind a corporate proxy or pulling from internal registries? You can now sync your local certificates to running Podman VMs directly from the command palette. Open the command palette with F1 and run the Podman: Synchronize certificates to all VMs command. Extension authentication access control Extensions can no longer silently access your authentication sessions. When an extension tries to use an existing account or requests a new sign-in, you'll now see a prompt to allow or deny it. This prevents extensions from accessing credentials without your knowledge. [image: image.png][image: image.png]Pull image workflow improvements Users can now cancel image pulls in progress and take immediate actions after successful pulls. A new cancel button allows stopping long-running pulls, and new 'Open Details' and 'Run...' buttons appear after pulling an image, eliminating the need to navigate to the Images page to find and work with newly pulled images. [image: image.png][image: image.png] Environment-based filtering In Podman Desktop, you can manage different container environments: Docker, Podman, Apple Container for instance. If you are using Podman Desktop in this situation, you will see a new environment combo box on resource management pages, allowing you to filter containers, pods, images, volumes, and networks by their specific environment. If you have only one environment, this filter will be hidden to keep the screen simple. [image: image.png][image: image.png][image: image.png]Additional managed configuration settings for extensions Building on the managed configuration support introduced in 1.23, administrators can now control extension management through configuration files. Two new settings are available: - Disable custom extensions: Prevent users from installing custom extensions by setting extensions.customExtensions.enabled to false. - Disable extension catalog: Hide the extension catalog entirely by setting extensions.catalog.enabled to false. These settings can be deployed organization-wide through the managed configuration <https://podman-desktop.io/docs/configuration/managed-configuration-use-cases> file, giving IT teams tighter control over which extensions are available in their deployment. Troubleshooting section in Settings A new troubleshooting entry has been added to the settings menu, providing quicker access to diagnostic tools and information. This helps users find and resolve issues without having to search through multiple pages. [image: image.png]Confirmation dialog for connection deletion Deleting a provider connection now displays a confirmation dialog, preventing accidental removal. This safeguard ensures users must explicitly confirm before a connection is removed, reducing the risk of unintended data loss. Podman Desktop 1.22 Release! 🎉
by Denis Golovin 06 Oct '25

06 Oct '25

[image: podman-desktop-fall-1.22] Podman Desktop 1.22 is now available. Click here to download it <https://podman-desktop.io/downloads>! This release introduces exciting new features, improvements and bug fixes: - *Explore Features Section on the Dashboard*: Accelerates your onboarding experience #13776 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/pull/13776> - *Switching Podman Machines Between Rootless and Rootful (macOS and Windows Only)*: Simplifies Podman machine configuration #12781 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/pull/12781> - *Apply Kubernetes YAML Files with Ease*: Allows you to apply YAML without creating a file in the local filesystem #13751 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/pull/13751> - *Transparent Proxy Support*: Configures your CA certificates for all HTTP/HTTPS requests to avoid self signed certificate errors #13789 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/pull/13789> - *Include ARM64 Podman Installer for Windows*: Provides a Podman installer for Windows running on the ARM64 platform #13815 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/pull/13815> ------------------------------ Release detailsExplore Features Section on the Dashboard The new Explore Features section on the Podman Desktop Dashboard helps you quickly discover and use key features, accelerating your onboarding experience. From this intuitive section, you can easily: - Create containers - Manage Kubernetes resources - Browse the Extensions Catalog - Configure Docker compatibility [image: Explore Features Section on the Dashboard] Switching Podman Machines Between Rootless and Rootful (macOS and Windows Only) Podman allows containers to run in rootful (privileged) or rootless (non-privileged) modes, balancing security, flexibility, and system access. Now you can toggle an existing Podman machine between these modes using a simple “Run with root privileges” switch in the UI, eliminating the need to recreate the machine. [image: Switching Podman Machines Between Rootless and Rootful] Apply Kubernetes YAML Files with Ease The new 'Create File from Scratch' option on the Play Kubernetes YAML page provides an integrated text editor where you can write YAML from scratch or paste existing YAML artifacts. With syntax highlighting and validation, the editor ensures accurate YAML creation and reduces deployment errors. To use it, navigate to the Play Kubernetes YAML page, select 'Create File from Scratch', paste or write your YAML, and click 'Apply' to deploy to your cluster. This enhancement simplifies Kubernetes resource management, enabling developers to deploy pods, services, or other resources efficiently in both local and remote cluster environments. [image: Apply Kubernetes YAML Files with Ease] Transparent Proxy Support To ensure applications work seamlessly with transparent proxies, developers must configure the client environment appropriately. This typically involves adding the transparent proxy’s CA certificate to the system’s certificate store. Podman Desktop now leverages these CA certificates for HTTPS requests, eliminating the Self signed certificate in certificate chain error when downloading CLI tools or interacting with services outside the local network. This enhancement simplifies workflows in enterprise environments with transparent proxies, ensuring smooth access to external resources and streamlined CLI tool management. Include arm64 Podman Installer for Windows Starting with Podman v5.5, native ARM64 binaries are available for Windows, enabling better performance and compatibility on ARM-based devices. Podman Desktop now includes both ARM64 and AMD64 Podman installers, automatically selecting the appropriate version based on your system architecture. This enhancement ensures a seamless setup experience for Windows users on modern ARM64 devices. ------------------------------ Community Thank You 🎉 We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped to make Podman Desktop even better. Podman Desktop 1.21 Release! 🎉
by Philippe Martin 25 Aug '25

25 Aug '25

[image: podman-desktop-hero-1.21] Podman Desktop 1.21 is now available. Click here to download it <https://podman-desktop.io/downloads>! This release brings exciting new features and improvements: - Updated dashboard notification design: Brought notifications in line with the latest extension design (#13106 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13106>) - Notify when multiple Podman installations are detected: Added a warning for duplicate Podman installations (#12011 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/12011>) - Update Podman to v5.6: Updated Podman to version 5.6 for enhanced features (#13427 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13427>) - Make libkrun the default when creating a Podman machine: Changed default provider from AppleHV to libkrun on macOS (#11453 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/11453>) ------------------------------ Release details 🔍✨ EnhancementsUpdated dashboard notification design Dashboard notifications now follow the same design as the latest extensions (e.g., AI Lab). This enhancement ensures consistency in the user interface by implementing the updated notification design. The change addresses the visual inconsistency between dashboard notifications and newer extension notifications, providing a more cohesive and polished user experience. [image: Updated dashboard notification design]Notify when multiple Podman installations are detected Added a notification system to detect and warn users when they have multiple Podman installations (e.g., one installed through the website download and another through Homebrew). This enhancement addresses the issue where duplicate installations can lead to unexpected behavior, such as the UI displaying outdated version information even after running brew update. The notification informs users of the duplicate installation situation, allowing them to uninstall one version to resolve potential conflicts. [image: Updated dashboard notification design]Update Podman to v5.6.0 Updated the Podman engine to version 5.6.0, which was released on August 15, 2025. This update ensures that Podman Desktop users have access to the latest features, improvements, and bug fixes from the Podman project. The upgrade maintains compatibility and provides enhanced functionality for container management and orchestration tasks. More information about Podman release are available on Podman 5.6 Released <https://blog.podman.io/2025/08/podman-5-6-released/> and Podman 5.6 Released: Rosetta Status Update <https://blog.podman.io/2025/08/podman-5-6-released-rosetta-status-update/> blog posts. Make libkrun the default when creating a Podman machine Changed the default provider from AppleHV to libkrun when creating new Podman machines on macOS. This enhancement ensures that the default provider is synchronized with the CLI configuration, particularly for first-time users or when no existing machines are present. The change addresses the need for users to recreate machines when switching to AI model support, providing a more seamless experience. 🐞 Bug FixesUI/UX Issues - Cannot edit any Input value for path / folder: Fixed input field editing issues in preferences and file selection dialogs (#13603 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13603>) - Unable to save or make changes to any Preferences input value: Resolved preference input field saving problems (#13601 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13601>) - When shrinking and expanding Pods the UI layout breaks: Fixed CSS responsiveness issues with pod expansion/collapse (#13287 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13287>) - Upgrading from v19 to v20 causes shortcut errors: Resolved Windows upgrade path issues and shortcut problems (#13214 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13214>) - Website: Podman Desktop gets trimmed on some responsive sizes: Fixed logo trimming issues on responsive website layouts (#13510 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13510>) - Prompt box behaviour not handling secrets as expected: Fixed password input obfuscation in extension API (#13476 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13476>) - After setting up Podman from dashboard notifications, the notification is still active: Fixed persistent notification after setup completion ( #12877 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/12877>) - Onboarding initial tiles are not rendered until all built-in extensions are activated: Fixed dashboard tile rendering dependency issues (#13047 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13047>) - Logs of cancelled tasks keep going on forever: Fixed persistent logging for cancelled VM/cluster creation tasks (#12430 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/12430>) Container and Pod Management - bug(ContainerList): column environment should compare on engine name: Fixed container list environment column comparison logic (#13556 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13556>) - bug(ContainerList): container groups do not have environment set: Fixed missing environment information for pod and compose groups (#13553 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13553>) - Pod may be listed several times on the pod page: Fixed duplicate pod listings and Svelte key errors (#13048 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13048>) Extensions Issues - Fix the podman extension monitoring loop to avoid infinite loop when deactivated: Fixed extension deactivation loop issues (#13149 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13149>) - Cannot build an image on macOS with X-Registry-Config header errors: Fixed image building with invalid registry configurations (#13061 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13061>) - When creating a kind cluster with default values, http port should be detected dynamically: Fixed port conflict detection for Kind cluster creation (#12405 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/12405>) - Update button for particular CLI tool not removed after uninstallation: Fixed CLI tool update button persistence after removal (#13128 <https://github.com/podman-desktop/podman-desktop/issues/13128>) ------------------------------ Community thank you 🎉 We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped to make Podman Desktop even better. Podman Desktop 1.20 Release! 🎉
by Vladyslav Zhukovskyi 15 Jul '25

15 Jul '25

[image: podman-desktop-hero-1.20] Podman Desktop 1.20 is now available. Click here to download it <https://podman-desktop.io/downloads>! This release brings exciting new features and improvements: - *Start all containers in bulk*: A new bulk-run button allows you to start multiple selected containers at once, saving time when launching your container stack. - *Switching users and clusters*: Seamlessly switch your active Kubernetes cluster and user context from within Podman Desktop, making multi-cluster workflows much easier. - *Search by description in extension list*: Find extensions faster by searching not just by name but also through keywords in their descriptions. - *Update providers from the Resources page*: Easily update your container engines or Kubernetes providers right from the Resources page for a more streamlined upgrade process. - *Local Extension Development Mode*: The production binary now lets you load and live-test local extensions after enabling Development Mode, eliminating the need to run Podman Desktop in dev/watch mode. - *Instantly stop live container logs*: Now you can stop live log streaming from containers without closing the logs window. This gives you more control over resource usage and debugging workflows. - *New Community page website*: A new Community page on our website helps you connect with fellow users, find resources, and get involved with Podman Desktop’s development. ------------------------------ Release details 🔍 <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.20#release-details->Bulk Start All Containers <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.20#bulk-start-all-c…> If you have several containers to run, you no longer need to start each one individually. Podman Desktop now provides a *“Run All”* button on the Containers view to launch all selected containers with a single click. This makes it much more convenient to bring up multiple services or an entire application stack in one go. Already-running containers are intelligently skipped, so the bulk start action focuses on only starting the ones that are stopped. [image: Containers List page] Switch Users and Clusters <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.20#switch-users-and…> Podman Desktop’s Kubernetes integration now supports easy context switching between different clusters and user accounts. You can change your active Kubernetes cluster and user directly through the application UI without editing config files or using external CLI commands. This is especially useful for developers working with multiple environments – for example, switching from a development cluster to a production cluster (or using different user credentials) is now just a few clicks. It streamlines multi-cluster workflows by letting you hop between contexts seamlessly inside Podman Desktop. [image: Edit Kubernetes Context page] Extension Search by Description <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.20#extension-search…> The extension marketplace search has been improved to help you discover tools more easily. Previously, searching for extensions only matched against extension names. In Podman Desktop 1.20, the search bar also looks at extension descriptions. This means you can enter a keyword related to an extension’s functionality or topic, and the relevant extensions will appear even if that keyword isn’t in the extension’s name. It’s now much easier to find extensions by what they do, not just what they’re called. [image: Extensions page] Provider Updates from Resources Page <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.20#provider-updates…> Managing your container and Kubernetes providers just got easier. The *Resources* page in Podman Desktop (which lists your container engines and Kubernetes environments) now allows direct updates for those providers. If a new version of a provider – say Podman, Docker, or a Kubernetes VM – is available, you can trigger the upgrade right from Podman Desktop’s interface. No need to manually run update commands or leave the app; a quick click keeps your development environment up-to-date with the latest releases. [image: Resources page] Local Extension Development Mode <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.20#local-extension-…> Extension authors can now toggle Development Mode in Preferences and add a local folder from the new Local Extensions tab. Podman Desktop will watch the folder, load the extension, and keep it tracked across restarts, exactly as it behaves in production. You can start, stop, or untrack the extension directly from the UI, shortening the feedback loop for building and debugging add-ons without extra CLI flags or a special dev build. [image: Resources page] Instantly stop live container logs <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.20#instantly-stop-l…> The container logs viewer can now be canceled mid-stream, allowing you to stop tailing logs when they are no longer needed. Previously, once a container’s logs were opened, the output would continue streaming until the logs window was closed. With this update, an ongoing log stream can be interrupted via a cancel action without closing the logs pane, giving you more control over log monitoring. This improvement helps avoid redundant log output and unnecessary resource usage by letting log streaming be halted on demand. New Community Page <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.20#new-community-pa…> We’ve launched a new *Community* page on the Podman Desktop website to better connect our users and contributors. This page serves as a central hub for all community-related resources: you can find links to join our Discord channel, participate in GitHub discussions, follow us on social platforms, and more. It also highlights ways to contribute to the project, whether by reporting issues, writing code, or improving documentation. Whether you want to share feedback, meet other Podman Desktop enthusiasts, or get involved in development, the Community page is the place to start. ------------------------------ Community thank you <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.20#community-thank-…> 🎉 We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped to make Podman Desktop even better. Release details 🔍 <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.19#release-details->Podman v5.5 <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.19#podman-v55> Podman Desktop aims to work offline, so it ships alongside its binary, the Podman executable. In this release, the latest Podman 5.5 version provides new features, bug fixes, and better stability while using the tool. You can find the full changelog of Podman 5.5 on their release page containers/podman/releases#v5.5.0 <https://github.com/containers/podman/releases/tag/v5.5.0>. Bootc Extension 🦭 <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.19#bootc-extension-> The Podman Desktop Boot container extension (aka Bootc) has recently seen significant improvements; one of them is the usage of macadam <https://github.com/crc-org/macadam>. As the bootc tool applies a container image as an update to an already running Linux system, allowing the output to boot an entire OS with the container image included. To test the bootc artifact, you either need a dedicated machine or create a virtual machine from the artifact. To simplify the developer experience of testing the artifact, the Podman Desktop Bootc extension offers you a way to directly create a virtual machine from the artifact you created. [image: image.png] AI Lab ✨ <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.19#ai-lab-> The Podman Desktop AI Lab extension started as an experiment in 2024, exploring how AI workflows could be containerized, celebrating more than one year of updates and progress, the extension has grown to support a wide range of tools, such as Instructlab, llamaCPP, WhisperCPP and with the latest release OpenVINO, llama-stack and MCP. Minc extension 📦 MicroShift <https://github.com/openshift/microshift> is a project that optimizes OpenShift Kubernetes for small form factors and edge computing. Similar to Kind <https://podman-desktop.io/docs/kind> and Minikube <https://podman-desktop.io/docs/minikube>, an extension for creating and managing MicroShift clusters locally through Podman has been created. RHEL Lightspeed ⚡ Red Hat Lightspeed is a generative AI assistant integrated into Red Hat's hybrid cloud platforms, such as OpenShift and Enterprise Linux.9 <https://podman-desktop.io/blog/podman-desktop-release-1.19#user-content-fn-…> It provides natural language guidance within the console to simplify complex tasks, enhance productivity, and bridge IT skills gaps. Users can choose from various AI models, including OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, WatsonX, or deploy private models on Red Hat platforms. With a Red Hat subscription, you can experiment with Red Hat Lightspeed from anywhere, including Podman Desktop, through a new extension called RHEL Lightspeed. The RHEL VMs extension helps the user run RHEL virtual machines using the macadam tool.
