Can I install an Linux app in a buildah container, that when launched runs a GUI, and have that GUI displayed on the host OS/desktop? Any instructions/examples on how to do this would be helpful. For starters, the chrome browser for example. - Host OS: RHEL 8.x - buildah container: running latest RHEL UBI 8.x
Hi I asked a similar question on the podman list. I did get things working on 7, but haven't done an 8 version yet. I did run in to a good discussion though from Dan and it's something I'm going to be doing next week. Bryan
I tried playing with this too, but due to the version of RHEL 8 that I've on my laptop at the moment, I can't get X up and running for now. In theory, it should be something like this Medium.com article: https://medium.com/@SaravSun/running-gui-applications-inside-docker-containe..., but replacing 'docker' with 'podman'. A note, Centos 8 has changed the location of xeyes, so the Dockerfile probably should look like: FROM centos RUN yum --enablerepo=PowerTools install -y xorg-x11-apps CMD ["/usr/bin/xeyes"] Then $ sudo podman build -t gui-app . $ sudo podman run --net=host --env="DISPLAY" --volume="$HOME/.Xauthority:/root/.Xauthority:rw" gui-app At least that's the theory, t

I would think you need to disable SELinux to make this work as well. If not then this is a bug in SELinux.
If you're just looking for a containerized desktop app, you might want to try Flatpak instead of Buildah. Here's an article about getting started: https://opensource.com/article/19/10/how-build-flatpak-packaging I've been running Flatpak on my RHEL 8 laptop with great success. Pretty good integration and nice sandboxing features. If you're doing this as an exercise or development push on Buildah specifically, then ignore me!
